DOG DEPT + Cafe Asakusa
DOG DEPT + Cafe Asakusa Sumida River Terrace.
Unlike the typical dog or cat cafes that Japan is famous for where animals are available to be borrowed or be played with, this cafe welcomes pets owners to bring their own dogs along to have lunch, and offers a plentiful selection of dog food on their specialised doggy menu.
Offering a relaxing environment where visitors can enjoy food and drinks, the terrace provides scenic views of the Sumida River and the Tokyo Skytree, making it a popular choice for both locals and tourists looking to unwind after exploring the area. With comfy window lounges, it a great place to kick back and watch the cute canine clientele, I didn’t bring a dog with us because we were on travelling but was made to feel welcome, and it was a nice way to spend an afternoon speaking to the locals while getting a doggy fix when travelling.
Doggy Birthday Parties
While we were at DOG DEPT + Cafe Asakusa, there was a variety of pooches all on their best behaviour, one was even enjoying a special birthday celebration with his pet parents, he got a cake with a candle, a hat, and was serenaded with Happy Birthday by the friendly staff.
When to visit
During the week is less busy but on weekends, the cafe fills up quicky. Without a reservation, your chances of finding a table are slim. Reservations are taken until the day before, but the restaurant often reaches full capacity even by then, so it’s advisable to book early. After 2pm, it tends to be less crowded. Additionally, there is terrace seating at the rear of the first floor. You’ll need to order and buy your food on the second floor and bring it down, but it promises to be a delightful spot in the upcoming seasons.
You can even shop for pet apparel at the DOG DEPT store.
